Liverpool sent Florian Wirtz to Chelsea message as transfer roadblock revealed

Lothar Matthäus has tipped Chelsea to sign Florian Wirtz. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder, whom Liverpool signed from Bayer Leverkusen for a then-British record transfer fee of £116m last year, has failed to live up to expectations at Anfield under both Arne Slot and now Andoni Iraola. In his debut season, Wirtz featured 49 times across all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing 10 assists. The Germany international didn't manage to open his account until the end of December 2025, when he fired the Reds to a 2-1 victory against Wolves.
