The Downs edge out St Loman's to retain Westmeath title

The Downs retained the Flanagan Cup for the first time since their three in-a-row side of 1968 to 1970 with a very hard-earned win by the narrowest of margins against St Loman's, Mullingar in a pulsating Westmeath senior football final in Mullingar. Ronan O’Toole, home from Australia for the game, kicked a wide after 20 seconds, before St Loman's captain Sean Flanagan opened the scoring in the second minute. Joe Moran pounced for a fisted point to equalize before John Heslin pointed twice at the other end, the second from a free.
