Warren Gatland denied rugby return by late twist in overnight announcement

Warren Gatland has missed out on the chance to return to international rugby after Fiji confirmed the appointment of Rugby World Cup-winning coach Jake White. The former Wales head coach had been reported to be on the brink of landing the Flying Fijians job, with reports on Monday suggesting players had already been informed of his impending appointment. Gatland was among a strong field of candidates for the position, alongside former Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards before his move to Argentina , but Fiji have instead turned to the man who guided South Africa to World Cup glory in 2007.
