Motor sport legend Alan Jones, the last Australian driver to win the Formula 1 championship, has died just days after his 80th birthday. Jones claimed the F1 world title in 1980 with Williams, and was the second Australian to win the drivers’ championship behind Sir Jack Brabham. In a statement released by Motorsport Australia, Jones’ wife Amanda Butler-Davis confirmed the racing legend had died on Thursday. “We are extremely saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Alan, who passed away on 5 November following a short illness,” Butler-Davis said.
